Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is an excellent flooring option not only because of its durability and water resistance, but because it closely mimics wood, making it a great style choice for any home. Here’s your guide for choosing the best LVT flooring.
Material
The two main LVT options to consider are luxury vinyl and stone polymer composite (SPC). Each type has multiple layers with differences within the core. The LVT core contains PVC, whereas the SPC core contains a composite of limestone powders as well as PVC. LVT tends to be a little more flexible, while SPC is more rigid and is less susceptible to expansion and contraction.
Thickness
You’ll also want to consider the wear layer thickness when looking for LVT. Most residential floors need a wear layer thickness of 6-12 millimeters for durability. Floors with a thicker wear layer will last longer and protect the underlying design and core layers for longer. If you’re installing the LVT in high-traffic areas, you should choose a wear layer with a minimum 8 mm wear layer.
Installation
Lastly, you’ll need to decide how to install the floor. LVT can be glued to the subfloor, but it can also be installed as a “floating” floor, which means the tiles click into place without being glued down. This is a good option when installing the floor on an imperfect subfloor.
