Tile is resistant to stains, but over time the grout can begin to look grimy. Regardless of whether you have porcelain, ceramic, or natural stone tile, here are some tips for renewing your tile grout.

Cleaning Products
There are numerous grout cleaning products on the market that can successfully clean grout. Be sure to check your tile manufacturer’s instructions for recommended cleaners, and avoid anything acidic when looking for products. You can use a DIY solution that’s often just as effective as store-bought cleaners: make a paste using 2 parts baking soda with 1 part of either vinegar, water, or hydrogen peroxide.

Prepping for Cleaning
To prepare for cleaning, remove any dirt, food particles, or other loose grime using a wet cloth. Be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands during the cleaning process. Apply the cleaning solution to the grout and leave it for 15 minutes.

Scrubbing
Use an old toothbrush or grout cleaning brush to clean the grout. Scrub all the grout lines and make sure to rinse the grout completely with a mop, rag, or microfiber cloth after scrubbing. For more powerful scrubbing, try an electric toothbrush.

Preventing Stains
You can keep your grout cleaner for longer by applying a stain and sealer. If that’s not an option, you can use rubbing alcohol periodically to sanitize the grout and prevent mold and mildew from staining the grout.
