High foot and pet traffic can be hard on your flooring. It’s important to consider flooring options that are durable to avoid frequent replacement in high traffic areas.
Laminate
Laminate flooring is made of a base wood layer, a layer that looks like wood, and a protective top layer. These materials are resistant to scratches and water, so they’re a great option for high traffic areas. Unfortunately, once the top layer gets worn down the floor can’t be resanded; it will need to be replaced.
Vinyl
Vinyl plank floors are made of layers of PVC and fiberglass. This makes them very resilient and durable. They’re also manufactured to look like wood or tile, and although similar to laminate, vinyl plank floors are considered higher-end and more durable than laminate.
Tile
Ceramic and natural stone tile is extremely durable and resists scratches and other signs of wear. With proper installation and care it typically outlasts other types of flooring used in high traffic areas.
Carpet
While carpet may not be the most durable of all flooring materials, certain types can be good in high traffic areas. Carpet made of nylon with a high twist will stand up best in these areas. Speckled or marbled color patterns will help hide wear and dirt best.
